EATCS council statement, Eva Rotenberg

Mini-bio: I am an associate professor at the Technical University of Denmark who works on algorithmic problems relating to graphs, strings, and geometry. One of the problems that fascinates me is that of efficiently maintaining information about a graph as it undergoes changes. My home page has slightly more information.

Thank you for the nomination. I would be happy to contribute to the organisation of eacts, and to work towards improving the already high-quality scientific environment of theoretical computer science in Europe. Here are some things I find important that may or may not be relevant to the work of the EATCS Council in case I am elected.

  • We, as a community, should be kind, supportive, and encouraging, especially towards junior researchers.
    • Conferences, workshops, summer schools, and tutorial are important venues for junior researchers to expand their scientific horizon and meet other researchers, and we should (continue to) support any and all efforts to provide such venues.
    • The theoretical computer science community should (continue to) be an inclusive and safe place for everyone.
    • Feed-back from peer review should (continue to) be polite, and, when possible, constructive.
  • We should continue the efforts to attract and maintain high-quality conferences in Europe.
  • On the completely practical side, there are many topic-wise related conferences whose deadlines and conference dates are being coordinated every year so to not overlap. We, as a community, should remain vigilant about this, avoiding e.g. submission deadline for conference A on one of the days of conference B, etc.
  • We have many universities with talented and diligent students, and it is often a joy to teach the newest techniques in the field to students who have the prerequisites to understand them. We should support efforts to share teaching material, course plans, exam forms, exercises, tips, tricks, and experiences, across universities in Europe and abroad.

All in all, I would be happy to join the council, and I would look forward to work together with the many excellent other candidates who have been nominated this year.
